Because to run the game you first have to open steam. On my PC steam takes longer to start up than the game itself. Then you have the fact steam sits in the background chewing up about 60mb of ram. The advantage of steam is that here in Australia we can buy games via steam at US prices, which are usually far cheaper than buying it in Australia. ;)
