Default help me ObiWan Kenobi

My ability to use Photoshop is just above "Complete Novice", so please be patient with me.

I see the fantastic skins people make, with the different colours on, such as the awesome Veltins Team F.E.A.R. skins by Michael, and I want to know how you manage to seperate the different colours for the skin.

Which tool do I need to use? I'm never going to be great at skinning, but I'd like to get a simple something for my cars...but not just a a single colour...

Its all pixie dust and magic, No as Andrew so kindly pointed out its all done on seperate layers within Photoshop.

I do understand about layers, but I neeeeed to know how you guys separate areas to paint.

what I mean:
in Michael's Team F.E.A.R. cars, I would think the base layer is white, but the there is the green colour, plus a lighter green section green above it

It's that kind of effect I would like to achieve. I have had a look at the selection tools, but they don't seem to be what I'm looking for, though that could just be my lack of skill/overwhelming impatience that's causing the problem.

Please point this poor simpleton in the right direction!

that's exactly how it's done... layers...

base colour of white... then use something like the polygonal lasso tool to mark off the area of the body you're interested in colouring next... use that selection to create a new layer... fill the layer with the colour.... win!

in the one above, the light green areas at the side of the car are separate on the template, ie on a completely separate layer.

I generally use the Lasso tool in conjunction with Rectangle & Oval selections to select where I'm going to paint.

For tricky, curvy stuff, I cheat and use Illustrator, but you can do it in Photoshop too.

Cheers gents, the info is in Ramons skinning tutorial, it's just taken me 8 or 9 times of going through it to realise.

is there any other "photoshop type of things" that can edit cars for gtr evo?
my internet is slow and it would take a day or so to finish downloading.

The templates are in the *.psd format native to Photoshop. I really don't know if there are any converters for Paint Shop Pro, or if they would work properly.
