Default Thread subscription email notifications

Is it possible to get email notifications when configuring a subscription to a thread? It appears that it can be configured to email you notifications, but I don't see it happening.

When in a thread you can click on Thread Tools --> Subscribe to Thread --> Then select the email notification preferences.

What happens if you select instant email notification?

Nothing --- no emails or notifications.
I assume that I should get an email when something happens in the thread, like a post?

Hmm. Is "instant notification" the same as "instant messaging"? If it is, that could be the reason that "instant notification" isn't working for me --- I don't have IM configured.

If that's the case, then for email notifications "daily" is the shortest time frame? I didn't select that option thinking that instant notification meant that I would get an email immediately.
