Default Query about LAG

Sorry about the noobie questions but:

I understand that cars jumping around (on-line) is caused by system lag. I have noticed that during a race, some bounce around much more than others, while some are rock steady. My car seemed very smooth. So,
1. Is the lag caused by my system or is it associated with the other players?
2. If it is caused by my system, why only some cars and not all?
3. How can I tell if my system is causing lag to others (I guess I should ask them??)
4. If it is caused by my system, should I turn down the graphics options?
5. Are there any links where I can research this some more?

I would hate to be spoiling the smoothness of the gameplay by causing lag to others.

Warren

If only some cars are lagging for you, then the problem is not in your system, but in those ones who are "jumping". This is usually caused by poor internet connection, but not always, lag is a strange animal....

A good way to figure out if you are stable or lagging, to ask someone while you are onl-ine, to check your ping number (this can be found on the track a label above your car next to your driver name, default you can see it by pushing D button). I this number is below 100ms it should be ok.

Thanks Neo.
Are you saying that I can check my own ping number online? I tried but couldn't find it. Does the D key apply to RACE as it didn't seem to show anything for me (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place)?

nono he means that you can get another person you're racing with to tell you your ping. Try it yourself; in an online race press "D" and it'll show the player's name above their car on the track, next to which will be their ping number.
Ask someone you're racing with to press "D" and tell you what your ping number is.

Thanks Mikey,
I'll try that.

After googleing, I located an adsl speedtest site called Speedtest.net and did a few tests between my system and other countries, but the results were all over the place eg.
Brisbane 88ms
Sydney 49
Perth 109
Auckland 85
New York 258
Los Angeles 198
Singapore 392
London 343
Paris 666
Amsterdam 702

Don't know if this is indicitave of what I can expect on the RPM servers, but if so the European
(especially Amsterdam) results may be a worry for me. Hope not ('8-[')

not necessarily, so just check it on-line in the game, by asking someone to look at yours while you are on the track.

Looks like the news is not too bad. Raced with Mikey tonight and he advised my lag is quite acceptable.
So great to race with some friendly and clean drivers too.
My learning curve continues. Now to learn about TeamSpeak. I'll be old before I get the hang of all this, hang on I'm already nudging old. (:-$')
Cheers from downunder.
